Mark. When were you on Sto Nino to see the road completed? I was there in May/June 2009 and they had stopped working on the road in between Sto Nino and Takut. I did not see any real progress going towards the next barangay. I care not see any actual vehicles on the island as their is just reason for them to be there. Maybe a few jeepneys that will take people from one part of the island to the other.
If you have any pics of the road, can you share them on here?

I have been there once and found it to be the quietest inhabited place I ever stayed. The people were warm and friendly. The kids were curious about their strange visitor. The road was just finishing when I left, hopefully it won't mean an influx of noisy vehicles but perhaps that's inevitable. Maybe the new mayor can pass a preemptive horsepower limit or noise restriction law, lol. It would be a shame to lose the peace and quiet. I would like to help my future inlaws by building a wind generator or solar power system for them but don't have good knowledge of the resources available in Calbayog City. Any advice would be welcome.

After a week of temps in the mid teens, it is warming up to the low 50's during the day. Feels like summer now with these warmer temps.
With so many hits on the forum, it would be nice if other members or even guests would leave a post.
For many, I am assuming that they have not been to Samar or Leyte and are just looking for information.
For me, after many visits to bot Samar and Leyte, I think both Samar and Leyte have so much to offer. But sadly, there is not much investments that could make it better for the locals.

Being Ret. USN, I have been to Taiwan in 1976 for a few days and of course I have been to Thailand a few times.
As much as I like most Asiancountries, I like the Philippines first and Thailand second.
I am married to a Filipina now for over 33 years which sadly might be coming to an end. What ever plans we may have had to retire in Calbayog City now might be gone at least for me.
I am not sure what you are looking for with your visit to the Philippines. If you are looking for places to visit and relax on vacation, then I would select those areas that are tailored to the tourists.
Borocay whcih has nice beaches. I have not been there myself, but have had froends go there. On our last trip last May/June, we went to Bantayan Island which is almost like Borocay with its white sand beaches and clear water.
I would stay away as much as posiible to staying in Manila and use it only as a hub to arrive and depart out of the Philippines. There are some nice places to visit like the Mall of Asia that is the biggest in Asia so they say.
Cebu is a nice place to visit also. Depending on what you are looking for and what you want to do, the Philippines has many places to see. Tacloban City in Leyte is a good place to spend a few days if you are into WWII history.
Let Dale and I know what you are looking for in the Philippines and we can help you out.

By the way, the WYSIWYG editor being used here to write replies has a problem
in that the right hand side of the editor form extends beyond the right side of the
"Div" so the end of the sentence disappears during data entry. I have to hit
"Enter" as I see I'm nearing the right side of the text entry window.
Thanks for informing me of that problem. It is off topic for this thread though. I will start a new thread, under support, to address this issue.

I've not ever been to the Philippine Islands, but expect to visit in the very near
future. My wife (Taiwanese) and I do know Thailand, Malaysia (& Borneo) and
Taiwan quite well though. If you have the time and inclination to talk offline
about the area, lifestyles, etc. I'd appreciate the effort. St. Nino looks really
interesting from a retiree's perspective…

Let be the first to start a thread on here.
I am wondering how many have been to Sto Nino island which is about 14 miles away from Calbayog City.
I have been going to this island since 1981 and most recently was there this past May and June 2009. Not much has changed on the island in those years with some new houses and such.
Seems that they have started to build a road that will go around the island for which I wionder why the Govt would spend money on a road that no one will be able to afford. The money could have been used for building medical clinics staffed with a doctor and nurses.
