Happy,

I spoke with a couple more people from the islands. From what I'm hearing, it would be very difficult to find your great grandfather's grave. There are no official records of who is buried where. Since the islands are so remote, and poor, the cemetary land is simply owned by the government. When someone dies, the relatives don't have to buy a grave site, they just bury their dead where there is an empty space. The only way to find a specific grave is to spend time searching, or have someone show you where it is.

Additionally, if he was buried there a long time ago, it might be hard to read the grave marker. One of my wife's auntie's died about 20 years ago, on Almagro Island. The grave is not marked by a stone, only cement, and the words on it are no longer readable.

Hmmm. I don't see any avatar for you. Where did you upload it? Here is a blog post I wrote about how to get an avatar on blog comments. http://samar.expat2phils.com/2…..-comments/ The forum posts use the same method. Make sure you associate the avatar with the exact same email address that you used to create your account here.

If you are still having problems, add a new topic for avatar problems here: http://samar.expat2phils.com/f…..um-issues/.

hello,
Ive never been to santo nino island but my great grandfather is buried somewhere there and my grandfather was born there..is there a church and city hall on the island?does anyone know how old the church is or if its old same as the city hall bec im hoping if its old enough to have records of my grandfather and great grandfather..and or if they have records that survived the war bec my grandfather was born in 1906.im willing to travel to the island if i knew who to contact in their offices.any info appreciated thanks!

Happyornopia,

do you still have relatives on Sto. Nino? Your best bet might be to contact them.

If you aren't sure, maybe send a letter to your grandfather's family name, at the barangay where he used to live. If there are any family members left, they should get it. If Sto. Nino is the same as Almagro, there wouldn't be a post office there, so the postman will give the letter to someone on the boat, who is going to that barangay.

It might be difficult for them to send you a physical letter back, so give them a couple of additional methods of contacting you. Include your email address. There may not be internet access on the island, but the younger people sometimes use the internet cafe's, when they visit Calbayog. Also include a cell phone number, if you have one that can recieve text messages, as they may try to contact you that way.

Here is the problem I see for you. If you do not have any family still on the island to help you, there is no hotels on the island. So, you would have to get a hotel in Calbayog City and take day trip to Sto Nino. The island is about 14 miles away from Calbayog City. It takes about two hours to get to the island if the boat is riding heavy and the seas are easy.

Since there is no power on the island all day, they do not have internet access, so you could not contact them. You might try and contact the owner of this site as he lives in the Calbayog area and could do some research for you. He may be able to make contact with someone on the island via the church in Calbayog City.

Actually John, I sent him here to the forums. I have the same problems, as regards to contacting or visiting Sto. Nino. I did find out that the church in Sto. Nino is the main church for the islands, and old records from Almagro have also been sent there for storage.

I am not sure if I can provide any real answers to you. I have been to Sto Nino on and off since 1981. I am an American married to a Filipina who came from this island. Yes there is a church in the small twon of Sto nino along with a City hall building. I am not sure how long the church has been ther and if it is the same one. As for the City Hall, it has been in the same location since i first visited the island.

I am going to assume you are a Filipino who lives out side the Philippines. Getting to Sto nino island is easy if you had some family to meet you. Even if you did not and have been to the Philippines before, you could get to Calbayog City and then take a pump boat (large banka) to Sto Nino.

Here is the problem I see for you. If you do not have any family still on the island to help you, there is no hotels on the island. He is an American who is also married to a Filipina who came from an island across from Sto Nino. I know that he is very busy with building a house and trying to set up a business.

If you caontact him and have all the information of your family like birth dates, etc., he may help you.

I myself will not be going to Sto Nino this year.
