Ahhh, the brown outs…I never got used to them during my short stay in Calbayog.
Thank you for your feedback though. Truly most helpful.

Thank you again for your time to share your experience. I truly appreciate it. I would like to see my family online soon… but I know it will take a while to get the service installed.. I have to get used to "Philippine time"

This area does not have the best internet connections, though they are improving. Other areas, like Manila, are way ahead of us. The biggest problem seams to be the quality of the phone lines. There are no cable internet connections here, only DSL.
Currently I am using West Samar Telecoms' DSL. Sometimes it is refered to as PLDT DSL, but that is not entirely true. Their backbone is a mixture of PLDT and Bayentel.
What I like most about WST is that they are a local company. I have tried Globe, and had a lot of frustration. With WST you can usually reach a local tech with a simple phone call. Also, if you have a generator, you can still use WST's DSL during our frequent "brownouts" (power outages).

Thanks Wayne for your experience.
The bad experience I had with Smart was down in the Mindanao region. It was sooo bad that I vowed to never use them for *anything* ever!
So I am trying decide whether we go with Globe again (albeit it slow & many many outages) or whether we try PLDT or another company…
Not use to such a narrow choice hehe and so little feedback. Here in Australia we have a great forum for venting called whirlpool (http://www.whirlpool.net.au/)
It is so respected that the ISP & telcos have staff review and respond to issues raised against them.
Certainly keeps them on theirs toes 
Anyway, thanks again for your experience.

Ihave used smart in the subic area when i lived there
the service was pretty good i thought.my wife and i bought
a house close to calbayog.we will be there later in 2010
and hope we can get smart hookup.i have used the internet cafes around calbayog and they are okay not super fast.it seems like the are always upgrading things,so i keep my fingers crossed. wayne

Just to add to my previous post, my family have used Globe previously & I must say I have very little good things to say about Globe (except for 1 technician who went to a lot of trouble in his own time) but as a company they lack a lot.
Therefore I need an alternative if possible…
Anyone with a good experience?
Nobody yet?  Surely there must a be adecent internet provider in Calbayog City???

G'day to the folk here.
Really nice to see this blog & forum which I stumbled on by accident tonight
I have family in Calbayog City & they are wanting to get the internet connected at home.
I have read bad reviews about Globe & Dumb (oops I meant Smart)
So..wondering if anyone can share their experience/recommendation.
